Crime Reduction Advice

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

Hello all again,
What strange times we find ourselves in. I do hope you are all managing to live your lives as best you can.  You may not be aware that the serious crimes of Burglary, Robberies etc. are thankfully less common than people may think. Vehicle crime is always there and sometimes it appears in trends and peaks around this time when the temperature drops.

Protecting Yourself from Car Thieves
Do not leave items such as pens, sat nav systems, mobile phones, handbags etc. on display in your vehicle – even if you think an item is not of value, someone else may think differently.
Do not leave clothing visible. The pockets in such items may be empty but someone looking through the windows will not know that. Make sure your vehicle is locked and all windows, doors, boot and sunroof are closed properly.
Activate all security devices, alarms, immobilisers, etc. when left unattended.
Always park your car in a safe, well-lit place. Use your garage if you have one and consider fitting additional security measures such as extra locks or an electronic garage door. If you park your car on the drive, consider utilising security posts or fitting substantial locking gates.
Never leave your keys in a place within your home where they could be reached by someone with a hook or cane device as an example.

Extra Care on Cold and Frosty Mornings:
Never leave keys in the ignition and vehicle unattended when defrosting your vehicle, even if it is only for a few minutes. This does not matter if the vehicle is on your driveway or on the road.
Allow some extra time to defrost and stay with the vehicle while it warms up.  Alternatively use scrapers and or spray, and clear your windscreen and lights that way ensuring your view is completely clear before moving off.
If you leave your vehicle unattended with the keys in the ignition and it is stolen the insurers may argue that you did not take reasonable care and your insurance could be invalidated if making an insurance claim.
